We often ask clients to get close and maybe do something silly to loosen them up. We asked Emily to give Nate a hug and, instead of a kiss, to put her nose in his ear. It’s a silly pose, but weren’t hoping for a romantic moment. Maybe a laugh, because the pose is goofy and people tend to be ticklish when someone breathes in their ear. Nate, however, didn’t react. Surprised, I asked, “does that tickle at all?” He explained that because of the work he does with kids all day, he has a different definition of “personal boundaries” than most people. If someone sticks something in his ear, that’s just another Tuesday.
That zen attitude probably comes in handy as he and Emily raise Kendra, who was an extremely good assistant. She really shined when she was off camera and we asked her to try and make them laugh. At first she made silly faces, then started dancing, then became so interested in the dancing she started entertaining herself (all successful tactics for getting Emily and Nate to laugh).
I’m sure we’ll ask her again on the wedding day. We can’t wait to see what she comes up with!
